Vegan Tea Blends: Why Vegan Tea Matters
Share
When most people go to buy tea, they assume it's naturally vegan. After all, tea comes from plants. But not every tea blend is as simple as tea leaves and herbs. At Tea & Hammock, every blend is crafted with vegan ingredients because we believe tea should be transparent and connected to nature.
Are All Teas Vegan?
The short answer: no. While it is true that tea leaves themselves are vegan, many of the teas you buy at the grocery store or in coffee shops have added ingredients, which may contain animal products. Examples include: honey granules, dairy-based flavorings, milk powders, and certain "natural flavor" blends. This surprises many tea drinkers who assume all tea is plant-based.
Why Vegan Tea Matters
One reason is because transparency matters. Knowing exactly what's in your tea allows you to make choices that align with your personal lifestyle, values, and health. Whether you're vegan, dairy-sensitive, or simply prefer cleaner ingredients, transparency allows you to feel confident about what you're drinking. For those following a plant-based lifestyle, tea should fit naturally into daily routines without requiring ingredient guesswork.
In addition to the aforementioned reasons, many tea lovers find that teas made with real herbs, flowers, fruits, and spices offer a more authentic flavor experience and greater depth than heavily processed ingredients.

A Closer Look at Questionable Ingredients
Milk ingredients
May appear as: milk powder, non-fat dry milk, whey, casein, caseinate, lactose, cream powder, or butter oil. These ingredients are common in chai latte mixes, dessert-flavored teas, and bubble tea mixes.
Carmine
May appear as: cochineal extract or natural red 4. The source of this ingredient is crushed cochineal insects. That’s right. Insects. It is used to create red or pink colors in some fruit teas.
Shellac
May appear as: confectioners glaze or shellac. Its source: lac insects. This is used on added fruit pieces, candy inclusions, or decorative ingredients in specialty tea blends. Even that pretty, dried fruit tea might have insect secretions coating your ingredients.
Gelatin
Source: animal collagen (usually cow or pig). This one is less common but still appears in dessert-style teas.
Natural Flavors
In many countries, natural flavors can come from plants, animals, or microbial fermentation. The label does not need to state the source.
Artificial Flavors
While artificial flavors are generally less likely to be directly animal-derived, there are concerns about animal-derived processing aids and animal testing. There is no way to tell on the label the source or method of processing.
The biggest uncertainty comes in the broad category of “natural flavor” because these flavor compounds can legally originate from either plant or animal sources, and there is simply no way to know what you are getting when reading the label.
Why Tea & Hammock Chooses Vegan Ingredients
At Tea & Hammock, we believe tea should be rooted in nature. That's why our blends are handcrafted using real tea leaves, herbs, flowers, spices, and botanicals. Not only that, we know firsthand the negative effects of not knowing exactly what ingredients you are consuming. Our goal is simple: create tea that delivers comfort, flavor, and a moment of calm while staying true to clean, vegan ingredients that you can trust.
Our Butterfly Pea Flower tea is a great example of how nature often already holds the most remarkable experiences. Made from whole butterfly pea blossoms, it brews a naturally brilliant blue without artificial dyes or colorants. Add a squeeze of lemon and watch it transform into shades of violet.

Vegan Tea and Mindful Living

When you select thoughtfully crafted tea made with real ingredients, you're choosing a product that reflects simplicity, mindfulness, and a deeper connection to what you consume. Those small choices can turn an ordinary cup of tea into a meaningful daily ritual.
When paired with sustainable choices like reusable infusers and cups, every cup becomes a small part of mindful living that often begins with the habits we practice each day.
