Meet the Founder

Tea & Hammock was born from a lifelong love of tea and the quiet moments it creates.

Founder Karin (Car-in) Munson has always been drawn to tea-not only for its flavor, but for the ritual around it. The pause before the sip. The conversations shared over a pot. The comfort tea brings during difficult seasons and the way it quietly connects people across cultures, families, and generations.

What began as a personal passion slowly became something more: a desire to create teas that invite people to slow down, reconnect, and reclaim a moment for themselves.

Rooted in Tucson, Arizona, Karin draws inspiration from the desert landscape, local ingredients, and the unhurried rhythm that tea naturally creates. Every Tea & Hammock blend is thoughtfully crafted in small batches using whole ingredients, with an emphasis on quality, comfort, and creating teas people genuinely look forward to returning to.

Today, Tea & Hammock is supported by small, close-knit team of about nine people who share that same belief: tea is more than a drink-it's a ritual, nourishment, connection, and a small act of care in a busy world.

Loose-Leaf Tea Questions & Answers

1. What makes Tea & Hammock loose-leaf tea different?

Our teas are made with whole tea leaves, herbs, flowers, spices and botanicals. We keep our blends simple and ingredient forward, without relying on oils, powders, or artificial ingredients.

We broker our tea leaves from small established farms around the world who are pesticide free. This not only keeps the chemicals out of our tea, but it also supports community farms.

2. Are your teas gluten-free and vegan?

Our loose-leaf teas are made with gluten-free and vegan ingredients. Individual ingredients are always listed on each product page, so you know exactly what's in your cup.

Gluten-free note - Because we use whole ingredients, and not chemicals or fillers, this by nature eliminates the risk of gluten in our tea. We have one tea, Pause, that contains oat straw. While oat straw itself is gluten-free (and rarely will contain any oat in itself, the product is organic) oats have been grown near the same fields as wheat. But this is true of any oat grown.

Vegan note - Because we use flowers and whole ingredients, mostly organic, there are the rare times we come across something non-vegan/bugs. We do our best to sort our ingredients before blending to reduce any non-vegan ingredients.

3. How much loose-leaf tea should I use per cup?

A good starting point is about 1 teaspoon of loose tea per 6-8 ounces of water. Some tea, especially large-leaf and herbal blends, may need a little more due to its larger size. Also, don't assume if the tea leaf is rolled or small that you will need more. Tightly dried tea has a tendency to expand and release flavor over steeps.

4. What temperature should I use to brew loose-leaf tea?

It depends on the tea. Green and delicate teas prefer cooler water, while black, pu-erh, herbal and chai blends generally handle hotter temperatures.

Black - 195-210, Pu-erh - 195, Oolong - 185 - 200, Yellow - 185, Green - 165 - 185, Matcha - 175, White - 165 - 185, Herbal - 185 - 210.

5. Can I steep loose-leaf tea more than once?

Absolutely! This one of the unique things about loose-leaf tea. Unlike tea in bags and majority of commercial tea which are 'one and done', many quality loose-leaf teas - especially oolong, green, pu-erh, and whole-leaf teas - can be steeped multiple times. Each infusion may taste slightly different.

6. Can your teas be made iced or cold brewed?

Yes. Many of our teas are just as good iced as they are hot. Moroccan Mint, Buzzing Hibiscus, Travelers Chai, and many of our floral and fruit-forward blends are especially good over ice.

Our customers find after drinking a few cups of our tea hot they will put the remaining tea in the refrigerator for an iced glass later.

7. Do you offer caffeine-free tea?

Yes. We offer a variety of naturally caffeine-free herbal teas and blends. Look for Herbal Tea when shopping or check the individual tea description. We do not decaffeinate our black tea.

Our Chillin Chai is an herbal version of Travelers Chai both of which contain the same spices for that warming cup.

8. How should I store loose-leaf tea?

Keep your tea sealed and away from heat, moisture, sunlight, and strong odors. There's no need to refrigerate or freeze dry tea.

9. Do you offer tea subscriptions?

Yes. Select teas are available through Subscribe & Save, so you can have your favorites delivered automatically and save on each recurring order. You can manage, pause, skip, or cancel you subscription any time.

10. Where is Tea & Hammock located?

Tea & Hammock is a Tucson, Arizona loose-tea company. We do not have a brick-and-mortar location just so we can put our time, energy and dollar into providing high-quality tea.

You can shop with us online and find us at select local markets, events, cafes, and retail partners around Tucson.

We fully support our business partners and work closely with them to provide each community with our tea as it should be.

11. Do you offer wholesale loose-leaf tea?

Yes. We work with cafe's, bakeries, retailers, boutique hospitality businesses, and other partners looking for quality loose-leaf tea.

Yes. We offer options for fundraising, corporate and group gifting, events, and other community partnerships.

13. Are your reclaimed teapots new?

No, and that's part of what makes them special. We search high and low, far and wide to find previously loved teapots and give them another life.

Because they're reclaimed, each one may have its own character, history, and sign of previous use. We do our best to restore and clean our teapots but it's always wise to give it a good clean before use.

Steepers and specialty items will always be new; these are noted as such.
