The tea is a traditional beverage that holds significant cultural importance in Morocco. When we visited Morocco in 2019, all I wanted was to have Moroccan Mint tea in Morocco. It is not merely a drink but a symbol of hospitality and friendship, commonly served throughout the day and during social gatherings. The preparation and serving of Moroccan Mint tea are steeped in tradition, reflecting the values of community and warmth.

In Morocco, serving mint tea is an essential part of social etiquette. It is offered to guests as a sign of welcome and respect. The ritualistic pouring method not only enhances flavor but also showcases hospitality skills. The proverb associated with Moroccan mint tea states that “the first glass is as gentle as life, the second glass is as strong as love, and the third glass is as bitter as death,” illustrating how each infusion has its unique character.

Preparation Instructions

Steps for traditionally brewed Moroccan Mint tea

Start by heating water to 185 degrees. Once heated, pour a small amount into a large teapot to warm it up. In the warmed teapot, add 1 – 2 tbsp Moroccan Mint tea and approximately 3 tbsp of sugar. Fill the teapot with the remaining hot water (makes 32oz) and let it brew for about three minutes. This allows the flavors to meld together. To achieve a frothy top on your tea (which is desirable), pour a small amount into one glass and then back into the pot. Repeat this process until you see foam forming on top of the liquid. Pour the tea into 12oz glasses from a height to create more foam and garnish with additional mint sprigs if desired. Tea can be brewed more than once.
